"Two for Joy" is a limited edition linocut (linoleum or relief print)
This is a limited edition of 100, and all are numbered, titled and signed in pencil.
I designed, carved, and individually hand-printed each one in my studio in Tacoma Washington.
This is not a digital reproduction. It is an original artwork and a hand-crafted product, each print may vary ever so slightly.
This crow linocut is titled “Two for Joy” after the nursery rhyme “One for Sorrow”.
"One for Sorrow" is a traditional children's nursery rhyme about magpies or crows (There are variations).
According to an old superstition, the number of magpies/crows seen tells if one will have bad or good luck.
Here are two crows to bring you joy!
One for sorrow,
Two for joy,
Three for a girl,
Four for a boy,
Five for silver,
Six for gold,
Seven for a secret never to be told.
(You might also remember these lyrics from the song "Murder of One" by "Counting Crows")
I spend a lot of time planning, thinking, sketching. I start with an idea that I am passionate about. The subject matter for this one is about the relationships crows have with one another. They are very social, and partner for life.
I watch them preen one another, care for the juveniles and feed them, and generally just BE together.
I was thinking about the crow family that lives in our neighborhood, and their offspring, including a crow we have dubbed “Owen” who meows like a cat and torments the dog. ?
I was also thinking about the connections with my husband and my family. One of my favorite memories from last summer was a day spent on a remote beach with my family. We spent the day picking wild blackberries in the sunshine. We made mobiles from things we found on the beach. We read, ate, talked, laughed, and of course ate lots of berries! It was a wonderfully joyful day, and one I will always remember.
I wanted my crow family to be amongst the wild blackberries that for me evoke the joy of being together, the sweetness of sun-warmed berries, and the beauty of their togetherness.
