Every bite of BOUCHÉES Snack Mix is inspired by someone in Becca Salmonson’s life – her mom, a friend, her kids – and informed by her work as a holistic nutrition practitioner. What began as a way to provide healthy, healing food for a good friend through chemotherapy treatments  has now turned into the growing business called Becca’s Petites. Each snack mix is certified vegan and free of grain, gluten, and dairy, proving that you don’t have to sacrifice taste for good nutrition.

TheWMarketplace carries four delicious flavors of BOUCHÉES Snack Mix – both savory and sweet – and recently had the opportunity to ask Becca about her company and her advice for other women entrepreneurs.

BOUCHEES Snack Mixes from Becca's Petites

What inspired you to start Becca’s Petites and BOUCHÉES Snack Mix?

I started my business out of love for my workout partner and dear friend who was diagnosed with cancer. I created my snacks to get Kevin through his difficult chemotherapy treatments, and when he passed, I felt a calling to share my better-for-you snacks with anyone who has a hunger to live well and to use the proceeds to go towards his son's education fund. My mom inspires me every day, even though she is no longer here. She suffered from multiple sclerosis and cancer as well but always taught me to find joy in every day and in everything I do.

What has been the most exciting or rewarding part of owning your own business?

When customers try my better-for-you snack mixes for the first time and really enjoy them! It makes my heart smile knowing I created something both healthy and delicious that people love and will "love them back." I enjoy having flexible work hours, as opposed to a 9-5 job; I can run a business while still being present for my kids.

What has been the most challenging thing about getting Becca’s Petites up and running?

Being a solo operator has been the most challenging thing for me. It can be frustrating and somewhat lonely when you have to do "all the things" and don't have a sounding board or the support you need on a daily basis to further your business. I'm a mom FIRST, so I have to take care of all my babies, and of course, this business is one of my "babies" too! And I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the financial piece as well. Bootstrapping a business is no joke.

How long have you been in business and has your business changed since you started it?

I've been in business for 5 years and have grown slowly over time. During the first pandemic lockdown, I was able to quickly pivot to e-commerce, so that was a huge change to my business model.

Can you identify a moment in your business that was pivotal in your success?

When the buyer for The Fresh Market hunted me down at a trade show two years ago because she was super interested and excited about my mixes - she had found me on Instagram and later ended up carrying me in all 159 stores - that's when I knew I was truly onto "something!"

Why did you decide to join TheWMarketplace?

I love The W Marketplace's mission and believe in supporting fellow women entrepreneurs - as my mom used to say, "a rising tide raises all ships!"

What mentors or communities have been important to you?

Both the Vegan and Gluten-Free communities have been huge supporters and instrumental in my success. My snacks are Gluten-Free and Certified Vegan. And Kara Romanik of Mamie's Pies has been my personal CPG tour guide all along. I honestly don't know what I would have done without her advice, support, and friendship along the way.

Do you have items, photos or mementos on your desk that inspire you each day?

Yes, I have a photo of my mom on my desk. She also passed from cancer, and my BOUCHÉES Snack Mixes are named in honor of her French heritage. I also have a Bible in the corner of my desk, because it reminds me to "do good" every day in all things I do.

Do you have any advice for other women who are getting started in business?
Yes. Don't be afraid to seek out help or ask questions from people in the industry. Do your due diligence and research first, but ask the questions and be open to advice. And most importantly, have fun along the way. You will meet the most incredible people who will become your biggest fans, and don't forget to return the favor. We all have to start somewhere.
