The E-Commerce Platform Supports Women-Owned Businesses and Has Attracted Former Amazon 3P Executive, Successful Entrepreneurs and More

(SEATTLE, WA.) May 18, 2022TheWMarketplace announced today that it’s raised more than $1.4M via a successful Wefunder campaign to continue growing and developing its booming e-commerce platform. Dubbed the economic engine for women, the company enables buyers to shop their values by purchasing from women-owned businesses, both products and professional services and engage in community support of women and girls—and has attracted the attention and backing of former Amazon 3P Executive, Erika McKitterick as lead investor. 


McKitterick spent more than seven years at Amazon, where she most recently served as Head of US Third Party Account Services and supported sellers in accelerating their growth in the Amazon store. In supporting and funding TheWMarketplace, she shared that her previous experience in helping to grow women’s businesses spurred her to get involved. 


“In my past seven and a half years at Amazon, I’ve had the privilege to work with some of the most inspiring women-owned businesses,” says McKitterick. “In this next chapter, I look forward to empowering even more women through TheWMarketplace. More than just a platform, TheWMarketplace is an economic engine supporting women so they can find the resources they need to launch, grow and succeed in business.” 


Joining McKitterick is founder of Big Dot of Happiness, Sherri Yukel, who matched McKitterick’s investment and provided significant funding for the round. Yukel has spent the last two decades successfully navigating the ever-changing landscape of e-commerce and disrupting the celebration industry—and plans to share her hard-won wisdom with TheWMarketplace’s founding team. 


“When I was introduced to TheWMarketplace, I was immediately drawn to the mission to support female entrepreneurs,” says Yukel. “As an e-commerce founder, I know how hard it is to get started and what a difference it makes to be surrounded by a supportive community. I know that TheWMarketplace is poised for rapid growth and I’m thrilled to lend my expertise and experience.”


McKitterick and Yukel will join the company’s board of directors where TheWMarketplace Co-Founder, Kate Isler, says she’s thrilled to not only have them as investors, but to also tap their deep expertise and guidance as the company continues to expand.

In addition to McKitterick and Yukel, the campaign caught the attention of renowned entrepreneur and investor Daymond John and his private investment group, Angels and Entrepreneurs. After going through rounds of screening and personally interviewing TheWMarketplace Co-Founders Kate Isler and Susan Gates on the “Hot Seat,” John recommended the investment to his Angels and Entrepreneurs group—giving the campaign a significant infusion.  

 

The successful round comes amid growing changes in the investing landscape: the rise of women investors, the increased demand from them for ESG investment opportunities, and the desire to democratize investing and increase access to wealth-building opportunities for women. Democratizing investing was top-of-mind for TheWMarketplace Co-Founder, Susan Gates, when she and Isler were preparing to fundraise. 


​​“We launched TheWMarketplace with a vision for it to grow into a billion dollar business and we knew we needed to raise money to get there,” said Gates. “Last summer we started researching and evaluating our options and quickly realized that crowdfunding was perfectly aligned with our mission. We love the idea of democratizing investing and giving women at all income levels access to investing in our growing business. With their help, we’ve already raised an amount that most female founders don’t and we feel incredibly inspired and motivated to continue the momentum they’ve created.”
