Tazzy Candy is Bringing Hard Candy Back and Leaving Sugar Behind!

That’s the slogan Lindsay Simon and Delia Hughes feels is a fitting headline for their year-old business. After years in the food industry, the two friends launched Tazzy Candy – vibrant, sweet hard candy without the sugar. Recently they shared with TheWMarketplace how their new business has benefited from asking advice from others, being open to retooling their strategic direction and having fun coming up with delicious concoctions of sugar-free hard candy and lollipops.

Why did you start your business? What motivated or inspired you?

We are both huge foodies, and specifically, candy lovers. We even worked in a candy laboratory together while studying Food Science in college. We always intended to start our own food business, but after graduation, we knew we needed industry experience. After years of working in [the food industry], we finally took a leap of faith and started Tazzy Candy, a better-for-you, no sugar candy brand committed to sophisticated, vibrant flavors and offerings for adults!

What is something you know now that you wish you knew when you started your business?

Lindsay: Knowing how much we've accomplished already and how invigorated we are every day, I wish we had the confidence to start Tazzy sooner! Leaving your everyday job is frightening, but the journey has been amazing!

Delia: Not being afraid to ask your network for help! When you start a business, you will never be good at everything, and asking for advice from people who have been through it before is key to learning and making the most informed decisions possible!

Why did you decide to join TheWMarketplace?

TheWMarketplace is a unique retailer platform that helps female-founded companies grow. We saw this as a fantastic community to be a part of, and the company's mission aligns with who we are as a brand.

What has been the most exciting or rewarding part of owning your own business?

Being able to bring our vision to life and share it with others. We've received some beautiful stories of how our candy has brought joy to those in a challenging spot – this has been the most rewarding part of our jobs.

Can you identify a moment in your business that was pivotal in your success? Have you had an “AHA!” moment(s)?

We're still so early in our business that each day is truly a string of "AHA" moments!

How long have you been in business and has your business changed since you started it?

We've been in business for about a year, and we've changed strategic direction constantly since our very first lollipop launch. From innovation to our digital experience, we're always thinking of what we can do better and what we should do next!

Do you have items, photos or mementos on your desk that inspire you each day? What are they?

Lindsay: When we first left our jobs to start Tazzy Candy, my parents gifted me a sign that says "Don't be afraid to fail. Be afraid not to try." It may sound corny but I have this sign on my desk to remind me to believe in myself, take risks, and keep pushing forward!

Delia: I like to write a gratitude list everyday where I list out three things I am grateful for. This list always keeps me centered and mindful of how fortunate I am to be able to start a business and pursue a dream!
