Blaine Tiongson, founder of Momma Pots

I decided to pour all of my creative spirit into making beautiful vessels that would inspire others to connect with nature too, and Momma Pots was born.

Why did you start your business? What motivated or inspired you?

I am inspired by things that grow. A San Diego native, I spent my childhood on three acres of land, zigzagged with creeks and teeming with plants, where a love of nature settled deep in my bones. After spending 15 whirlwind years rising in the ranks of the restaurant industry, a life-changing car accident forced me to slow down. That’s when I returned to my roots and cultivated a magnificent garden at my San Diego home. It filled me with a happiness so deep that I couldn’t help but want to share it. I decided to pour all of my creative spirit into making beautiful vessels that would inspire others to connect with nature too, and Momma Pots was born.

Have a detailed business plan with dialed in projections. Be good with your numbers. Know what capital is it going to take to fund the business. Find investors. Get loans. Why did you decide to join The WMarketplace?

We were first connected at ALT Summit in New York and were drawn to the core values of the company. We love that WMarketplace is another women-owned company that supports small businesses. We're proud to be part of the community with other talented, woman-owned brands and happy to show our support.

What has been the most exciting or rewarding part of owning your own business?

Everyone told me I was out of my mind starting a pottery business. I ignored the noise, I put my head down and worked my ass off and I was rewarded with a business that is my passion. Learning from that experience I will always: encourage others, share and help, motivate. It's so exciting to have a successful, self-made business from hard work, dedication and a lot of sacrifices. I am proud of the business and team I’ve built. I continue to be rewarded by how much joy and happiness the business brings our consumers and retailers around the world.

Can you identify a moment in your business that was pivotal in your success? Have you had an “AHA!” moment(s)?

The pivotal moment for me was when I realized the original Handmade Collection of pots was not scalable and the business couldn't grow in a way I wanted. I needed to pivot and outsource it— that was my AHA moment. That moment led me to create the best-selling Gemstone Collections, available now worldwide at 800 plus retailers.

Do you have items, photos or mementos on your desk that inspire you each day? What are they?

I have precious pictures of my two kids who are my inspiration. I also have a handful of my very first concrete-poured pots to remind me how much myself and the business have grown.

If a journalist were to write a headline about you/your business, what would it be?

“Live your best plant life with Momma Pots”
