Terry Sidford launched her coaching business, Create Your Life International, almost two decades years ago in the entrepreneurial town of Park City, Utah. Twenty years, two books, and a gig as a TedX speaker, later, Terry’s business has grown to hundreds of clients and more opportunities than she originally dreamed of. In this week’s Her Story, Terry shares some of what she has learned along the way to growing her successful business.

Rachel Speth, founder of Bambu

[I started my business] to reach more people and help them fulfill their potential personally and professionally.

Why did you start your business? What motivated or inspired you?

To reach more people and help them fulfill their potential personally and professionally.

Vermouth Lipsticks

How long have you been in business and has your business changed since you started it?

When I started coaching over twenty years ago, I had one client. I have since built a business with hundreds of clients. I continued to grow into other areas as an expert on courage, writing books, TEDx talks and motivational speaking. I was a contributing writer for a health magazine in Australia for five years. I hosted a television show and am now a podcaster. The key to continuing to grow is to keep looking for opportunities and give them a try. You never know what you are capable of until you try. You just might surprise yourself.

What is something you know now that you wish you knew when you started your business?

I wish I had asked for help from others who have been successful. I now ask for help from people who are experts in something I do not know. For example, I wanted to write a book and didn’t know where to begin. I started working with someone who teaches you how to become an author. It was the best thing I have ever done. I’ve also learned to put your time and energy into what you do best. If you don’t like doing accounting for your business, hire someone to do it for you. When I started coaching, I didn’t realize I could ask for help in areas I did not understand. I knew I needed advice to build my business. Eventually I started going to business networking events and started to learn how to be successful.

What has been the most challenging thing about getting your business up and running?

Not getting the business from all my marketing efforts.

What has been the most exciting or rewarding part of owning your own business?

Making a difference in people's lives and fulfilling my passion and purpose.

Can you identify a moment in your business that was pivotal in your success? Have you had an “AHA!” moment(s)?

Giving my TEDx talk was a pivotal moment in my career. When I applied to be a speaker, I did not think I had the skills to pull it off. What I learned throughout that process was pivotal for me and my career. I discovered my passion and gift for speaking. I also told stories that I had never told anyone. It was liberating and led me to write all my life stories in my memoir.

I’ve also learned to put your time and energy into what you do best.
